From Christmas to Brexit: how retail is adapting at a time of change

In today’s InternetRetailing newsletter we’re reporting after a month where more sales took place online. It’s a small yet steady increase that means more than 22% of UK retail sales took place over the internet in September. That’s a level not seen since last January, when post-Christmas discounting traditionally dominates. That’s reflected in updates today from Ted Baker and Domino’s Pizza, both reporting strong growth in online sales.

Looking ahead, Salmon is now predicting another online Christmas that will, it suggests, be coming early, in November, and see mobile taking centre stage and, to a lesser extent, voice ordering.

We think all of these stories reflect the continuing shift online in the way that shoppers buy. It’s one that will dictate investment in coming years, as shoppers move their internet ordering to mobile, and start to adopt voice.

We’re also reporting on the BRC’s call for the Government to balance a post-Brexit immigration policy that works for retailers and their EU staff with training UK staff to meet the industry’s need during a time of transformation.
