A new Amazon fulfilment centre is set to open in Utah, expanding the ecommerce giant’s footprint in the western United States.
The new site is set to be sized at 1 million square feet and will be used to pack large customer items such as sports equipment and furniture.
It will employ 800 full-time employees in addition to the 2000 it currently employs in Utah. The new employees will have access to training programmes.
The project will be developed by Seefried Industrial Properties.
Alicia Boler Davis, Amazon’s VP of global customer fulfilment, said: “We’re excited to open a new, state-of-the-art fulfillment center in West Jordan and to continue innovating in a state committed to providing great opportunities for jobs and customer experience.
“Utah has a talented workforce, and we are very excited to grow employment beyond the more than 2,000 associates already serving customers in the state.”
Amazon recently announced plans for three new logistics centres in Spain, adding over 30,000 square metres to its footprint in the country and bringing its latest robotics technology Pegasus Drive to Europe. The online retailer is opening the new centres in the cities of Barcelona and Pontevedra as well as the region of Asturias.
Amazon recently began using its Scout robot to offer autonomous delivery to customers in southern California. A small number of the cooler-sized robots began delivering on 7 August in Irvine, part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, in daylight hours from Monday to Friday.
