Consumers care more about packaging than emissions, says report


Consumers care more about recyclable packaging than carbon emissions when receiving deliveries, according to a new global consumer survey.
The report by International Post Corporation (IPC), which polled 35,700 respondents in 25 countries including the UK, the US, Germany, China and France, found that 81% of consumers would like packaging of cross-border online purchases to be recyclable, with 47% strongly supporting this sentiment.

Meanwhile, 79% of respondents said they would like their packaging to be reusable. Only 1% of respondents said they had paid extra for sustainable packaging when buying online, while 44% said they were likely to do so in the future. This compared to 43% who said they were unlikely to ever pay more for sustainable packaging.

These figures compared to only 61% of cross-border shoppers who said they wanted the delivery process to be carbon-neutral. 46% said they would be willing to receive a package a few days later to reduce environmental impact.

Only 35% of respondents had changed their online shopping behaviour in the past year due to sustainability concerns.

Holger Winklbauer, CEO of IPC said: “This aligns very well with the efforts the postal sector has been making in the field of sustainability and supports the new direction of our sustainability programme through alignment to the wider UN Sustainable Development Goals.”
