Aldi is to sell groceries online for the first time in the UK, as it puts food parcels for vulnerable and self-isolating shoppers on sale on its website.
From tomorrow morning the supermarket will be selling food parcels of 22 products for home delivery, including tinned food, rice, pasta, toilet roll and antibacterial handwash. Customers will be limited to one of the £24.99 parcels each.
Previously the discount supermarket sold only wine and special buys online in the UK.
Fritz Walleczek, managing director for corporate responsibility at Aldi said: “We are committed to providing quick, safe and affordable access to food for all our customers and understand that, for some, visiting one of our stores is not an option at the moment.
“We’re constantly looking for new and better ways to support our customers in these uncertain times and I’m hopeful that these food parcels will make life a little easier for some of the country’s most at-risk people.”
Aldi has 875 shops in the UK where, in the 12 weeks to March 22, it had an 8.2% share of the market. It plans to open 1,200 shops by 2025.
