DHL’s parcel business will invest £6.7 million in new vehicles as it looks to support future expansion.
The additions to its fleet include 45 Volvo Tractor Units, 24 Volvo Rigid trucks and 29 Don-Bur double-deck trailers.
The Volvo vehicles offer new safety technology such as auto-braking and driver assistance technology, as well as a feature which detects tiredness indicators and warns the driver to take a break. They also offer better visibility of pedestrians and cyclists, as the vehicles will largely be used in urban areas.
The Don-Bur trailers will offer double the capacity of traditional trailers, allowing more parcels to be transported without the use of additional vehicles.
Scott Laird, VP of operations at DHL Parcel, said: “The investment in our fleet is part of the infrastructure upgrade the business requires to support growth. However, this is also an opportunity to ensure drivers are equipped with the latest technology to ensure their safety and that of the public.”
Other recent additions to the DHL fleet include the Goupil electric vehicle, which the carrier has recently introduced in Rotterdam and Utrecht in the Netherlands.
DHL recently introduced a parcel sorting machine at a warehouse in Austria which will provide a throughput of around 6000 pieces per hour.
The company has recently invested in AR training functionality in Iberia.
