DHL reaps rewards of automated recruitment process

DHL is looking to set a new standard for hiring in the logistics industry through a new automated recruitment process, which has saved it tens of thousands of hours.
The IT system automates every step of the recruitment process, including online applications through a dedicated portal, pre-hire testing and onboarding. The company has also invested in seven regional recruitment centres across the US, which all use the same processes.

In addition, DHL has improved its orientation and training processes, as well as added new workforce management tools. This includes a mobile app that employees can use to select the most suitable shifts.

The company claimed that the system was receiving 445 applications per day and 32,000 fewer hours spent on administrative hiring tasks. Since being introduced less than a year ago, it has generated over 52000 applications and resulted in 5000 new workers.

The system is currently in place in the US and will launch in Canada during the first quarter of this year.

Tim Sprosty, SVP of Human Resources at DHL Supply Chain, said the new process was an effort to address the talent gap in logistics, which he said was “one of the most significant issues facing [the] industry.

“Our customers rely on us to provide talent that consistently meets their needs; and to accomplish that, we apply the same level of operational excellence to talent acquisition and retention as we do in developing supply chain solutions for our customers. Using a combination of innovative thinking and disciplined execution to attract and retain the people our business depends on is resulting in significant benefits.”

Sprosty said: “We believe the supply chain industry offers a wealth of opportunity to the right applicants, and our goal is to drive that message, and ensure it is easy for qualified applicants to enter the industry and rewarding for them to stay.”
