Dixons Carphone today reported a “two-hump camel” shape to its Christmas trading – with peaks around a record Black Friday as well as strong post-Christmas trading.

The electricals retailer, whose Carphone Warehouse, Currys and PC World retail brands are all Model traders in the IRUK Top500, said sales in the 10 weeks to January 9 were up by 5% compared to the previous year. In the UK & Ireland, sales were up by 5%, in the Nordics by 3% and in Southern Europe by 9%.

“I’m very happy to be reporting a further year of good like-for-like growth over our peak trading period,” said chief executive Sebastian James. “The two-humped camel shape that emerged last year was further accentuated with an all-time record day on Black Friday and a strong promotional period after Christmas. In all territories we saw continued market share gain, especially in UK mobile.”

The company said it expected pre-tax profits to be in the range of £440m to £450m, and said that it would now roll out its 3-in-1 format, which brings together PC World, Currys and Carphone Warehouse stores, across its UK and Ireland market.
