John Lewis, Amazon and Ocado: disruption is the mother of innovation
In today's InternetRetailing newsletter we're reflecting on how disruption of the retail industry is leading to innovation. It used to be said necessity was the mother of invention, and certainly many innovations are coming out of a need to compete in a dynamic and uncertain market. But innovation also comes as the way we do things simply changes, and new things become possible, thanks to new technologies. We hear from Ocado's Matt Soames and James Donkin about the technology and attitude to innovation that lies at the heart of the online grocer, and we consider approaches to disruption and innovation from both Amazon and John Lewis. We've analysed Moss Bros' approach to omnichannel retailing.

In today's guest comment we hear from Mike France of Christopher Ward on whether starting an online business with friends is a good idea, while this week's IRX preview looks at some of the technology that will be on show at this year's Expo. Our research team also shares the findings of its latest research, into website tags.

Webinars

Sarah Taylor, chief marketing officer at SmartFocus, joins us on April 4 for a session that focuses on social. She'll argue that this is now the vital channel to reach the digital consumer, and show the role that it plays in an omnichannel marketing strategy. An innovative approach to addressing the modern commercial society is at 4pm on April 4. Click to visit the SmartFocus webinar page and to register for the free event.
