FedEx electric fleet gets a boost with electric chargers at 42 sites in US

FedEx is adding charging sites at 42 of its US sites as it looks to expand its electric vehicle fleet.
The carrier is working with Chanje to electrify the sites in California with direct current charging hardware, which is 10% more efficient than standard alternating current.

The chargers also have high maximum power output and variable rate technology, meaning that charging speed can be adjusted depending on requirements. In addition, there is a built-in software platform for remote monitoring and controlling chargers.

FedEx has already agreed to add 1000 Chanje electric delivery vehicles to its fleet, with 100 purchased directly from Chanje and 900 leased from Ryder System. The V8100 model which FedEx will use is a medium-duty van with a range of 150 miles, 19 cubic metres of storage and 2721kg payload.

Mitch Jackson, chief sustainability officer, FedEx Corp, said: “FedEx is thrilled to continue being a pioneering industry leader in the electric vehicle space.

“The vehicles and DC charging infrastructure will not only help FedEx meet our operational efficiency and sustainability goals, but provide learning, scaling and experience to others in the vehicle electrification journey. We believe this will be a game-changer.”

DPD and DHL are two other carriers that have invested in electric vehicles.
