How sports boosts retail sales online

If warm weather and the-then upcoming World Cup sparked online growth of 17% in May, we can only imagine, writing on another sunny day with plenty of footballing action, that June’s figures will be way ahead. Anecdotal evidence has previously suggested that not only does sport fuel online shopping as customers stock up for the event, but that those less interested in the television action may go online to do their own shopping. We’ll be watching for June’s figures with interest. Interestingly, while online sales rose in May, high street and shopping centre footfall was down, according to the latest BRC/Springboard figures. No doubt June will be an equally quiet month for bricks and mortar as football fans stay glued to their sets.

It’s also been a good week for M and M Direct, which had a float in its sight but now reveals it’s been sold for a princely £140m. Meanwhile, we also report on how Majestic Wine says online growth is slowing thanks to growing competition in the wine market, but it’s now focused on a strategy that will drive home its multichannel advantage.

And in today’s focus on the Internet Retailing Awards, tells us why being shortlisted for the Market Entry Award was important for them.

Finally, we also report on a study from Youstice and Goldsmiths University that suggests shoppers won’t complain about transactions worth less than £21.30 – and explains why that’s a bad thing.
