IKEA is introducing electric vehicles and alternative fuels in Finland as it looks to reach zero emissions for delivery across its markets by 2025.
Starting from 1 October, the electric vehicles will serve both online orders and in-store orders in the Tampere area. Customers will be able to receive products at home the same day.
Subject to the success of the pilot, the vehicles will be extended to the rest of Finland.
IKEA also said it will introduce renewable diesel fuel into the Helsinki and Raisio areas. The diesel alternative is derived from non-petroleum sources such as fats and greases, which IKEA claims offers 90% lower emissions than conventional diesel.
In addition, IKEA’s home design staff will begin using biogas trucks, which will refuel using biogas from food waste in IKEA restaurants.
Jessica Lehtinen, IKEA Finland’s responsibility manager, said: We want to do concrete actions for the benefit of both humans and the planet. Our goals are ambitious, but we firmly believe that we can achieve them.
“We are very proud that emission-free home delivery is already being tested in five major cities, such as Shanghai and London, but now also in Tampere, Finland, beginning in October.”
