European shoppers can now buy online from JohnLewis.com. The website has just launched international delivery to 11 European countries including Ireland, Germany, Spain and France. Deliveries are expected to take between three and five days, on average, at a cost of £7.50.

From August the retailer will also add further destinations including, outside Europe, the US, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, where delivery will take between an average of between six and eight days and will cost £15.

The upgrade to the service came in a week that the website put in its best performance of the year so far. In the week to June 18, figures released today show that johnlewis.com saw a 45.6% lift in sales, compared to the same time last year. Fashion sales were particularly strong online, rising by 98%. Imaging sales more than doubled from the same week last year.

The week was also a good one in the chain’s shops. Cardiff led the way with 19% growth in sales compared to last year, while Glasgow saw a 15% rise. Across the group, total sales rose by 8.6%, including VAT, to £57.02m from £52.51m at the same time last year. Excluding VAT, sales were up by 6.6%.

However, at sister company Waitrose today's figures showed sales from online services fell by 15.6% compared to the same time last year, while total sales, including petrol rose by 7.6% to £104.78m from £97.36m last time.
