The new Ocado Zoom service has now launched, powered by same-day delivery technology company Stuart.

Customers in London can now use the service to receive their groceries within an hour of ordering. Stuart dispatcher technology integrates with Ocado’s website, app and back end to assign grocery orders automatically to the best suited and available independent courier. Depending on the order size and delivery location, it might be assigned to a courier using a car, a bike or a moped.

The service was first announced by Ocado last month but is now being trialled in parts of London. Stuart says the new service makes the grocery shopping experience more immediate for customers.

David Saenz, chief operating officer at Stuart, said it was excited to be “enabling faster grocery delivery at such a pivotal time for this industry.” He added: “By bringing together both companies’ cutting-edge technologies, we have built a service which facilitates the grocery shopping experience and gives consumers quicker and more flexible access to grocery shopping, matching their own fast-paced lives. This sector is quickly evolving and we are excited to be at the forefront of it.”

Stuart points to figures that suggest online grocery sales will grow by 48% by 2022 – and says services such as this will help it to exceed customer expectations.

Ocado Zoom won a mention in Ocado’s recent announcement of its partnership with M&S as one of the key assets that it is set to bring to the partnership. The tie-up between the two, which will be achieved through M&S’ 50% purchase of its online grocery business, will use, said the announcement, “our existing strengths in food for now and food for tonight through Ocado’s delivery innovations, such as the Ocado ’Zoom’ trial.”

At the time, Steve Rowe, chief executive of M&S, said: “Combining the magic of M&S Food with Ocado’s leadership in online technology allows us to transform UK online grocery shopping by offering customers the broadest, most innovative and relevant range in UK food retail with award-winning service. Our partnership with Ocado will create shared value for our customers, colleagues, supplier partners and shareholders, operating with a common sense of purpose and values.

“This is a transformational step forward in shaping the future of M&S and in becoming a truly digital first retailer with at least a third of the business online.”
