Online sales grew in July, compared to the same time last year, but fell compared to the previous month, according to official figures out today.
The Office for National Statistics’ Retail Sales report for July 2014 said ecommerce shoppers spent an average £716.0m per week in July, 11.2% more than at the same time last year. But the total was 1.9% down compared to June 2014.
UK shoppers’ internet purchases in July accounted for 11.2% of all retail spending, compared to 10.3% in July 2013.
Meanwhile, total retail sales showed growth, as the quantity bought rose by 2.6% to an average of £7bn a week in July, compared to July 2013, which was up by 0.1% compared to June 2014.
But average sales prices fell by 0.9% in July, compared to the same time last year.
Focusing on specific sectors, department store online spending was up by 16% year-on-year and accounted for 10.5% of all spending, but fell by 5.3% in the ‘other’ stores sector, where 7% of spending took place online.
