Domino’s ecommerce investment continues to pay off as online sales grow and grow

Pizza delivery firm Domino’s said it would continue to focus on “industry leading digital and online technology” as it reported fast growth in ecommerce sales in the first quarter of its financial year.

Domino’s Pizza Group today reported a 38.4% boost to UK online sales, which grew to £82.4m in the 13 weeks to March 31, from £59.5m at the same time last year. Online sales accounted for 61.9% of all delivered sales in the UK, up from 49.8% last time. Some 25.2% of all online sales were made through a mobile device, up from 16.4% last time.


Total system sales across the 13 weeks rose by 12.3% to £164.1m, up from £146.2m last time at the business, which trades in Switzerland and Germany as well as the UK and Ireland. Like-for-like sales in 670 mature UK stores grew by 6.6%. In the Republic of Ireland, like-for-like sales rose by 8.1%.

Against this background of growing sales, the company continued to open new outlets. Five new stores opened their doors in the UK and two in Germany. Throughout 2013, Domino’s aims to open 60 new stores and 18 in Germany.

Lance Batchelor, chief executive, said: “Domino’s continues to show there are still significant opportunities in our core UK and Republic of Ireland markets as well a the new territories of Germany and Switzerland, and we are in a great position to seize those opportunities.

“New product launches, a relentless focus on service, industry-leading digital and online technology, an ever-growing marketing budget and a healthy pipeline of new sites are just some of the ways we continue to drive this terrific business forward.”

He said the company was well placed to continue its performance in a “tough trading environment.”
