UPS plans to add a number of natural gas powered trucks starting next year as part of a bid to reduce emissions.
Working with partner Agility Fuel Solutions, the carrier will invest $450 million to add 6000 natural gas powered vehicles to its fleet between 2020 and 2022.
The vehicles can run on either conventional natural gas or renewable natural gas (RNG), which is generated from sources such as landfills and dairy farms. UPS has committed to buy 230 million gallon equivalents of RNG over the next seven years.
Juan Perez, chief information and engineering officer, UPS, said: “UPS continues to expand and improve our smart logistics network by implementing new technologies and creating a highly flexible, data-driven, and sustainable network.
“That is why we intend for 25 percent of our vehicles purchased in 2020 to run on alternative fuels.”

UPS aims to make use of a range of alternative fuels including electric vans, based on the technologies which work best for each specific delivery route.
