Dixons Carphone is to cut 800 jobs in its stores as it simplifies its management structure for an omnichannel future.

News of the job losses come as the retail group today outlined changes that it says are designed to improve the customer experience across a single retail business that brings together its Currys PC World and Carphone Warehouse brands.

General retail management roles will be replaced with new management roles focusing on sales, customer experience and operational excellence. Staff will now work across both electricals and mobile in its more than 300 multi-brand stores, and there will also be new opportunities in its ShopLive video link personal shopping service. Dixons Carphone says the changes are part of its ongoing strategy to become one joined-up business, and will make it easier for customers to shop across its sales channels.

Dixons Carphone chief operating officer Mark Allsop said: “We remain committed to our stores as part of an omnichannel future, where we offer the best of online and stores to our customers. As part of this we want to empower our store leadership teams, create a flatter management structure and make it easy for our customers to shop with us, however they choose. This proposal will ensure in-store roles are focused on giving a seamless customer experience and exceptional service across all our customer channels, whether online or in-store.

“Sadly, this proposal means we have now entered into consultation with some of our store colleagues. This was not an easy decision and we’ll do everything possible to look after those colleagues we can’t find new roles for, financially and otherwise.”

The news comes months after Dixons Carphone said it would close all of its 531 standalone Carphone Warehouse shops in the next stage of its omnichannel transformation strategy. That came at the cost of 2,900 jobs from a UK store workforce of 17,000. At the time the business said 1,800 – or 40% of staff in those closed shops – would move to work in 305 Carphone Warehouse outlets within large Currys PC World shops. Seventy Carphone Warehouse shops in the Republic of Ireland were not affected by the change.

Currys PC World is a Top50 retailer in RXUK Top500 research, while Carphone Warehouse is ranked Top100.
