... and celebrates100 million mobile downloads of eBay apps
As well as rebrinding (albeit slightly), eBay is celebrating the 100 millionth download of its mobile app, as well as 100 million listings posted via mobile.
eBay’s suite of apps include the core app, the eBay Motors app, the eBay Fashion app as well as the RedLaser price checking app. Available in eight languages, and in more than 190 countries across the globe, eBay apps have been downloaded 25 million times in the last six months alone – making them some of most popular and successful shopping apps available.
eBay has been at the forefront of m-commerce since 2005 when it first enabled consumers to purchase items through their phones. In 2007 eBay launched its first iPhone app, updated in March 2010 to enable customers to also sell through the app. Now the core eBay app, as well as the eBay Motors app, eBay Fashion app and the RedLaser app are available across very major mobile operating system.
eBay is expecting 2012 to be its most successful mobile Christmas ever, with a predicted 30% of the most popular Christmas items being sold through a smartphone. In the UK an item is purchased every second via a mobile device, the highest proportion of mobile sales compared to any other European market, and globally $275 is spent on eBay mobile every second.
Olivier Ropars, Senior Director of Mobile Commerce, eBay Europe said: “Before there was even an iPhone or an App Store, we identified that mobile shopping would fundamentally transform the way we shop – allowing people to shop whenever and wherever they want. Making buying and selling as easy as possible on your mobile has been key to reaching this milestone and we will continue to improve on the way we engage with consumers across our app suite. With consumers checking their phones around 40 times a day, having a strong mobile presence is no longer a ‘nice to have’ but an essential for any retailer who wants to stay ahead of the game.”
