Pinterest launches AR powered Try On for lipstick to tap into growing number of beauty shoppers

With 42% of its shoppers looking for beauty products, Pinterest is launching a new augmented reality feature, Try On powered by Lens, for trying on different lipstick shades to match skin tone – and then allowing shoppers to buy from the app.

With Try on powered by Lens, Pinterest users can virtually try on products before they buy. Pinterest is starting with lipstick shades and will explore other areas to help Pinterest users try new things.

This technology builds upon Pinterest’s work with Lens camera search and shoppable Pins to bring a new “try before you buy” experience to the platform.

To use the feature, shoppers have to open up the Pinterest camera in search, click “try on” to find different shades and swipe up to shop from brands like bareMinerals, Estee Lauder, Sephora, Neutrogena, and L’Oreal.

Pinterest has also integrated its skin tone range feature so users can see similar lip shades on skin tones that match their own. Pinterest wants its users to be their authentic selves, which is why the platform skipped the skin filtering and smoothing elements of other augmented reality features.

Try On for lipstick is currently only available in the US on iOS and Android mobile, and will be rolled out globally in the near future.
