Loop, the online service that delivers household brands in refillable containers, has gone live in the UK in partnership with Tesco.

Available across the whole of the UK from today, the Loop Store service allows shoppers to order key brands online or through the Loop app and have them delivered to their home.

When all the product has been used, a collection of the empties is arranged, returning the packaging to be cleaned and reused.

The service is free, requiring only a refundable deposit for the Loop tote bag used to deliver and collect the items and a deposit for the packaging, which is refunded each time goods are returned. The deposit account can then be used to fund future deposits or cashed in.

Brands currently available in the trial include Heinz, Coca Cola, Nivea, Persil, Danone and Noice Toothpaste, among others. More are set to be added as the trial rolls out over the coming months.

Containers are made of materials including stainless steel, aluminium, glass and BPA-free plastics and the company says that its packaging is 35% more sustainable than traditional ecommerce.

First mooted in February and set to go live in March, the UK launch of Loop was put back due to the pandemic. Now it is rolling out its initial trial of the service in the UK as part of Tesco’s 4Rs plan: Remove, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Loop is already running in France, in partnership with Carrefour, and the US, in partnership with Kroger and Walgreens.

According to Loop, the service reimagines the traditional milk delivery service with a modern perspective and offers “a revolution in design from your favourite brands” with everyday essentials now “available in durable, functional packaging that’s beautiful enough to display”.

The company is also looking to expand the reach of its reusable packaging philosophy to, in its words, “create the global ecosystem that will enable you to buy reusable products at your favourite retailers, restaurants, and more”.
