UK restaurants missing out on £5.6bn by not embracing technology

Did you know that the average person in the UK wastes more than a month of their lives just waiting for restaurant bills? And this is costing restaurants dear when it needn’t – all they need is mobile.

So suggests a study by mobile app company Velocity, which finds that 43% of consumers say they would eat out more often with a restaurant payment app, and of these, 50% of consumers would eat out at least once more every week.

And such an app could increase table turnover by 14% and generate up to £5.6billion in extra sales a year, projects the study.

Currently only 2 in 10 consumers use restaurant loyalty apps, but 64% of consumers would use restaurant loyalty schemes if they were all in one app.

“New technology is increasingly empowering consumers to take control, enhancing our experiences with immediate gratification. We are already seeing this in the transport, hotel and home entertainment sectors with the likes of Uber, AirBnB and Netflix, but these advances aren’t happening in a meaningful way in the UK dining sector yet,” explains Alex Macdonald, Co-Founder at Velocity. “These technological advances have the potential to transform the dining sector resulting in quicker bill payment, personalised service and increased customer loyalty & sales, a rare win-win for both consumers and restaurants.”
