M-Retailing’s light lunch vendor of choice, wagamama, not only offers great oriental fusion cuisine, but also now lets us pay with an app.


The restaurant has partnered with MasterCard to bring restaurant customers a more convenient and quicker way to pay for their meals using the Qkr! app with MasterPass, which will, the restaurant says, allow customers to pay their bill as and when ready, cutting out that average bill paying waiting time of 13 minutes.

wagamama is the first restaurant or retailer to offer this new innovation in payments from MasterCard. The app has gone through extensive testing to ensure customers can make faster and more convenient payments, whether on their own or in a group and is now available to use in 112 wagamama restaurants in the UK.

Scott Abrahams, Group Head of Acceptance and Emerging Payments, MasterCard UK&I, puts aside his Raman spoon, and explains: “MasterCard is always striving to improve payment convenience and choice for consumers. Working with and listening to businesses like wagamama helps us design new secure payment options for consumers which meet the needs of their changing lifestyles. The benefits of this app aren’t exclusive or unique to wagamama’s customers and we are working with multiple restaurants and retailers so they can offer this payment option to their customers too.”

Richard Tallboy, Director of Business Development, wagamama, elegantly dabs his chin, takes a thoughtful swig from his ginger, blueberry and cucumber juice and adds: “We know that the biggest area of feedback from restaurant customers is related to the speed and convenience of payment. The Qkr! with MasterPass payment app provides us with a great solution, allowing customers to control when they want to pay through a simple and secure download app. Whether they are having a quick bite at lunchtime and need to get back to work or are having dinner before a show, putting them in control of paying when they are ready makes for a more relaxing dining experience.”

“We also know that customers come to wagamama with friends and family to enjoy dining in an informal environment. Qkr! with MasterPass offers our customers the ability to dine together but pay separately via the app, simplifying the experience.”

Qkr! with MasterPass app is now available for wagamama diners to download from the App Store or Google Play.
