Multichannel: what’s it worth?

What’s a multichannel site that stands up to the rigours of customer demand, both now and in the future, worth? For Selfridges, the answer is £40m. As we report in today’s InternetRetailing newsletter, that’s how much the department store is investing over the next five years in making sure its site is ‘futureproof’. But read just a few of the many other stories in today’s newsletter to find plenty of support for the importance of such investment. Domino’s, for example, reported this week that it is making more money as customers move their orders online, while Ted Baker’s investment in a new e-commerce site has helped to lift ecommerce sales by 48%, and Sainsbury’s decision to serve customers in the channel of their choice is also paying off. All of which are good reasons for retailers to make sure their ecommerce or multichannel operations cope with customer demand. Where better to find out the latest ways of doing just that than at the Internet Retailing Conference 2014, where the theme is Refoundationing. We explain what that means, and explore the agenda of the conference in today’s IRC 2014 preview.

Today we also report on who bought Kiddicare, and on eBay Inc’s decision to separate eBay and PayPal into two businesses. Today’s guest comment comes from Paul Heywood of Dyn, who considers why and how retailers can plan to be resilient when unexpected traffic arrives.
