There’s a new line-up at the top of ecommerce and multichannel retail, with the launch of the latest IRUK Top500 2019.

Amazon, Argos, H&M, John Lewis, New Look and Sainsbury’s are this year’s Elite retailers in the annual ranking. H&M, New Look and Sainsbury’s all take the top ranking for the first time. Amazon appears for the fifth year in a row – the only retailer to appear in all editions of the IRUK Top500 so far. Argos and John Lewis, meanwhile, both appear for the fourth time.

This year is the first time pure fashion companies have appeared in the top ranking, while the domination of department stores, and those selling through a wide variety of categories, has lessened over the years.

Editor-in-chief Ian Jindal said: “Over the last half-decade this research has stood out because while it starts with a Footprint ranking based on retailers’ revenues, store networks or web traffic, it adds to that an in-depth understanding of their performance. That’s measured through six Performance Dimensions: Strategy & Innovation, The Customer, Merchandising, Brand Engagement, Operations & Logistics and Mobile & Cross-channel. Through this approach we aim to understand more accurately which retailers are performing strongly, and which strategies, tools and technologies are helping them to achieve that success.

“We believe that our research offers practical and useful insights into the best practice of what we term ‘RetailCraft’ that that this report will be a highly useful tool for retailers eager to learn from the best.”

He said that during the coming year, the RetailX team behind the IRUK Top500 research would continue to monitor how retailers respond to a retail climate in which shoppers are now both more willing to shop online, but more uncertain about spending in the light of Brexit.

“But, for now, our congratulations go both to this year’s Elite retailers and to all members of the IRUK Top500.”

This year’s report, produced in association with Klarna, is now available to read and download online. Alongside the listing of the Top500, which groups retailers into Elite, Leading, Top50, Top100, 150, 250, 350 and Top500 retailers, the report also features analysis of how retailers perform against the six Performance Dimensions, and how the representation of groups of retailers, from department stores to brands, is developing within the index.
