Sainsbury's online grocery sales rose by more than 20% in its latest financial year, the company said today.

Sainsbury's says it now delivers more than 130,000 online grocery orders each week, and can reach more than 93% of UK households through 187 stores.

Its non-food online sales are also growing, with a Click & Collect service introduced during the year that allows customers to order non-food items online and collect them in more than 160 stores.

The news came as the supermarket reported its results for the year to March 19 2011. It said its pre-tax profits rose by 12.8% to £827m, from £733m at the same time last year, on revenue, including fuel, up by 5.7% to £21.1bn. Excluding fuel, total sales grew by 4.9% in the year to March 19, while like-for-like sales grew by 2.3%.

Justin King, chief executive, said: “Sainsbury’s has continued to perform well. Customer numbers are at an all-time high of 21m transactions every week, which is up one million on last year, a clear indication of our growing universal customer appeal across all channels.”

Highlights also included the launch of six new food colleges training more than 10,000 staff a year, growth of non-food sales at three times the rate of food, and the opening of new space totaling 1.5m sq ft during the year.

King said the economic environment was expected to remain uncertain over the year ahead, but, he added: “We remain confident that our strategy alongside continued strong operational performance, will enable the business to make further good progress.”
