Outsized results from connected retailing

In today’s InternetRetailing newsletter, we’re struck by the outsized results that retailers get when they successfully join up their sales channels. Thus, Burberry this week reported 17% in its retail sales. Its customers, it seems, were particularly taken by features that link the store to online, such as the ability to order in-store using an iPad, or in-store collection of online orders.

Supergroup, meanwhile, reported strong online growth in its full-year figures. Notably, it reported seeing an impact when customers moved to mobile, but launched mobile and tablet sites in response.

Today we also have news of innovation from Made.com and Cloudtags, who are trialling the use of handheld product scanners in store, used by customers to find out more about the item they’re viewing.

We also report on the latest from Halfords as it reports strong cycling sales, online and off, Mothercare as it appoints a chief executive, and Thorntons, where online sales grew over its latest financial year – but fell in its last quarter.

Today’s guest comment comes from Jason Nestor of IBM, who considers issues that may be keeping retail bosses awake at night.
