Shoppers in three Waitrose branches can now use their own mobile phone to scan products as they put them in their basket, reducing the time they have to spend at the checkout.

The supermarket is trialling a 'scan as you shop' mobile app in its Clapham Common, Meanwood and Milngavie branches, enabling holders of its myWaitrose loyalty card to scan barcodes on their phone as they put goods in their basket.

If it's successful, the service will be rolled out to all Waitrose branches this year.

Quick Check

The app builds on the Quick Check service that was first introduced more than 10 years ago and for which myWaitrose card holders are now automatically registered. The new app, available from Apple or Google Play, enables customers to use the service on their own phones, viewing offers on the products they scan and keeping a running total of their spend.

"We are always looking at ways for technology to make our customers' lives easier," said Matt Clifton, Waitrose head of retail change. "The ease and choice of checkout options is becoming increasingly important to customers as the trend for shopping little and often continues to grow. Making Quick Check available to myWaitrose customers and exploring the opportunity for them to shop with us on their mobiles means we continue to deliver that convenience."
