Retailers still over the top when it comes to delivery packaging

Retailers are still overpacking products for delivery according to a new survey by Macfarlane Packaging which found that nearly a quarter (24%) of consumers are receiving overpacked items.
In a survey of 200 shoppers on their experiences across sectors such as fashion, home and garden and health and beauty industries customers also said packaging wasn’t suitable for some items. Nearly one in three said that the packaging was not a good fit for the products, with health and beauty faring the worst at 40%, home and garden at 38% and fashion at 10%.

The most damage was in home and garden at 12%, however this was also the sector where most consumers said retailers were using too much packaging (41%).

Laurel Granville, marketing director of Macfarlane Packaging, said: “The current key industry issues of overpacking, sustainability and customer experience are tested in this survey. We know that the unboxing experience remains a top priority for consumers and therefore, presents opportunities for companies to enhance their image, build their brand and reduce their costs.

Our research shows that there are still too many products being overpacked, however this is a tricky balance for many retailers who need to ensure that products like flatscreen TVs or fragile homeware items such as ceramics, candles or mirrors are delivered undamaged,” he said.
