Royal Mail is building a second major parcel hub in the UK as it seeks to transform to a parcel delivery-led business.
The UK mail incumbent began work last week on the 840,000 square foot site in Daventry in England’s Midlands region.
When fully operational in 2023, the site will be able to process over 1 million parcels per day.
As well as making use of energy-efficient heating and lighting, the site will include an automation solution from Beumer Group.
Simon Thompson, Royal Mail CEO, said: “Our business is accelerating and this state-of-the-art parcel hub in the Midlands will allow us to seize the market opportunity and continue to deliver great service for our customers at 31 million doorsteps up and down the country. I am sure our team are looking forward to the first day of operation as much as I am.”
The site will work alongside another hub in Warrington, which will open in 2022.
Royal Mail recently concluded a new agreement with the Communication Workers Union (CWU), which will allow it to make changes to its network. The carrier wants to pivot towards parcels in the midst of the ongoing shift to ecommerce.
