Ikea UK reports 27% online growth

Ikea UK has reported online sales up by more than a quarter in the first year of a transformation plan aimed at making the business affordable, convenient and environmentally friendly.

The global home furnishings retail brand, ranked Top250 in IRUK Top500 research, reported total sales of £2.1bn in its UK business for the year to August 31. That’s 8% up on last year and, says Ikea, helped it to grow market share to 9%.

Online grew still faster, with sales up by 27% and visits up to 224m. Innovations in its digital business include a virtual reality app, to enable shoppers to see what Ikea furniture would look like in their homes. It has also opened two new customer delivery centres in London, a foundation for its ambition of offering next-day delivery in London and two-day delivery across the rest of the UK by the end of this year.

Over the year the retailer has opened its first sustainable store in the UK, in Greenwich, which has won outstanding Breeam certification. It also opened two new planning studios in London. Some 98% of packaging used by Ikea UK is now renewable, recyclable or recycled, and the retailer aims to get to 100% by 2020.

Peter Jelkeby, Ikea country retail manager for the UK and Ireland, said: “Despite a challenging retail environment, Ikea has seen another year of strong sales growth as we continue the transformation of our business. We know that people’s shopping habits and expectations are changing, so continued investments in our shopping experience, our people and in adapting our operations to ensure we become a fully circular business by 2030, will be vital to secure the success of our business in the future.”

Ikea employs more than 11,000 people in the UK and has offered more staff the ability to develop new skills. It says diversity, inclusion and gender parity continue to be a focus for the business.
