Jägermeister is using new age verification technology so that shoppers using its website can now prove they are old enough to buy its products online.
Because shoppers can now use an app from Yoti on their phone to prove their age, Jägermeister is able to take debit card payments for the first time at the online Jagershop where it sells the speciality spirit.
Tim Hawley, innovation controller at Jägermeister UK, said: “Jägermeister UK is fully committed to responsible marketing. We adhere to our own strict marketing guides and also follow industry guidelines. As a brand, Jägermeister’s DNA is rooted in an ethos of mastery, boldness and innovation and working with Yoti allows us to meet the needs of our digital savvy consumers responsibly.
“By partnering with Yoti we can offer a frictionless and secure way for our customers to prove their age online. Yoti also helps us to comply with age verification in a way that favours our customers’ privacy, and lets us accept debit card payments online for the very first time – a great win for Jäegermeister and our customers.”
Shoppers use the Yoti app, available on iOS and Android, by taking a selfie and scanning a passport or driving licence with their smartphone. That’s then turned into a digital identity that can be used to prove their verified name and age without disclosing their full identity, by scanning a QR code or clicking a button.
Robin Tombs, chief executive and co-founder of Yoti, said: “The The government is taking bold steps to prevent underage sales through greater age verification requirements on products and services, including energy drinks, knives, acids and adult content. Yoti gives individuals a free, simple and secure way to prove their age online and in person, and helps retailers meet the requirements of regulators worldwide. Individuals only need to create their Yoti once and then use this time and time again to securely prove their age in seconds. As a result we’re seeing significant interest amongst the retail industry. We’re delighted to be working with Jägermeister to improve age verification online.”
