ScS expands its workforce as business booms following lockdown

ScS says it’s creating hundreds of new jobs as trade continues to be well ahead of last year, following a sharp rise in orders following lockdown.

ScS saw its orders drop dramatically – by 92.5% – during Covid-19 lockdown but once its stores reopened in late May orders rebounded, rising by 92.2% in the following nine weeks to July 25.

That rise continued in August and September, with sales up by 51% in the six weeks to September 5, prompting the decision to expand the workforce by about 300 people.

The sofa and carpets retailer, ranked Top500 in RXUK Top500 research, took on 150 new members of staff in August and now has 150 vacancies, both permanent and temporary, in locations including its shops, its warehouses and its contact centres. Part of that demand comes as the retailer has moved its distribution team from Warrington to a warehouse in Knowsley, near Liverpool, that is 40% larger than its previous site.

David Knight, chief executive at ScS, said: “Due to a sharp rise in orders we are in the the fortunate position of being able to add to our existing workforce. In the six weeks leading up to September, our like-for-like order intake grew by 51%, equivalent to £19m of additional revenue.

“We’re delighted to be able to invest some of this into new staff members, as we continue to navigate our way through these unprecedented times.”

ScS sells online and through 100 shops around the UK. It also has nine distribution centres and employs more than 1,800 people. The retailer brought all of its staff out of the furlough scheme in August, having topped salaries up to 100% over the period, and has given those who continued to work through lockdown an extra seven days of holiday entitlement.
