Logistics giant DB Schenker will trial a driverless vehicle on a public road in Sweden after the government issued it with a permit.
The permit will allow the company to test autonomous vehicles on a public road in an industrial area where traffic speeds are usually low.
The trial will take place starting in spring, with the permit valid until 31 December 2020.
It will use autonomous, electric vehicles from tech firm Einride, guided by its intelligent routing system. Einride’s vehicle, the T-pod, has been tested at DB Schenker’s facility.
Telecoms operator Telia will provide connectivity based on the next-generation mobile standard 5G.
Jochen Thewes, CEO of DB Schenker, said: “Autonomous trucks will become increasingly important for the logistics sector. Together with Einride, we are now able to introduce autonomous, fully electric trucks to a continuous flow on a public road – a milestone in the transition to the transport system of tomorrow.”
