Tesco’s Clubcard Plus loyalty subscription scheme launches next week, as the grocer enables shoppers to pay for extra discounts both online and in-store for the first time.

The UK’s largest supermarket will launch its mobile app-based loyalty scheme next Friday. It comes months after Tesco became the first UK grocer to offer Clubcard members lower prices in-store and online as part of its Centenary celebrations.

Tesco says that by paying £7.99 a month to join the new Clubcard Plus scheme, shoppers will be able to benefit from 10% discounts on own brands and 10% discounts on two big shops of up to £200 a month. The card also offers benefits for Tesco Mobile customers while users can also apply for a Tesco Bank credit card, which offers fee-free foreign exchange. Users will also be able to collect points, get vouchers and trade them in for rewards in the same way as they currently can using the free Tesco Clubcard.

Tesco chief customer officer Alessandra Bellini said: “We know that our customers are always looking for ways to make their money go further. That’s why we’re launching Clubcard Plus – so that they can get better value on the products and services that matter most to them, throughout the whole year.”

Tesco launched the Clubcard in 1995 and updated it in 2017 through a contactless card that customers can tap at the checkout to add points. Customers can also sign up to the Clubcard while they shop in store, via the Tesco Clubcard app, and can download their vouchers into the app. As a result of the improvements, the number of people using the Tesco Clubcard increased by 34% between 2017 and 2018 and the scheme currently has 19m members. In its new Clubcard Plus scheme the supermarket will test whether shoppers are prepared to pay for extra discounts.
