The growing importance of international sales to UK retailers

This is an archived article - we have removed images and other assets but have left the text unchanged for your reference

It’s clear, in today’s newsletter, that international sales make a real difference to UK retailers. Today we report as Ted Baker, fresh from the launch of its German website and the opening of international stores, reports fast growth in ecommerce sales. We also report as White Stuff launches its first local language website – again, in Germany, as Iceland trials international expansion plans. And we cover a report that suggests that were it not for online shopper, the average UK consumer would be clocking up more than 6,000 miles to buy the goods that digital brings within reach.

Clearly selling overseas is providing a useful way for UK retailers to broaden their markets and increase their sales. But to what extent does being a member of the European Union matter in this? Does the digital single market, and the lack of internal customs and trade barriers make it notably easier to sell across EU borders – or do we simply sell to our neighbours because they’re nearer? How much difference might it make if we leave the EU? Let us know what you think for in the next InternetRetailing newsletter we’ll be taking the theme further by analysing the difference membership of the European Union makes to UK ecommerce and multichannel retailers – and what Brexit might mean for the industry, ahead of the EU Referendum on June 23. We welcome your contributions at chloe at internetretailing.net – and are keen to hear from supporters of both the remain and the leave campaigns.

Today we also report on DHL’s move to work with InPost on improving convenience in deliveries for UK shoppers, and have guest analysis from Edwin Bos of Reevoo on Amazon’s recent move to combat fake reviews, alongside our regular guest comment, which today comes from Jed Mole of Acxiom who considers how online retailers can foster meaningful relationships with customers.
