H&M and Zalando adopt bikes, solar panels in carbon-cutting drive

Major European fashion retailers H&M and Zalando announced new sustainability initiatives today in a bid to drive down their carbon footprints.

The Swedish fashion retailer is working with Dutch package delivery service Fietskoeriers.nl to offer bike deliveries to online customers in the Netherlands.

The service collects the parcels using a biogas vehicle from H&M’s warehouse before shipping them to local hubs. Bikes take them the rest of the way.

Bike delivery is available the next day for the same price as normal delivery.

Pascal Brun, head of sustainability at H&M, said: “We are happy to see an increasing interest for sustainability among our customers and hope they will love this new climate-smart way of getting their fashion finds delivered to their homes.

“We look forward to evaluating this pilot project and to reveal new exciting projects when it comes to climate-smart transports.”

Meanwhile, Zalando has announced plans to install solar panels across its distribution centres by 2023.

The goal will also see the German retailer including a green building certification in all new buildings, which verifies that buildings are designed to conserve resources.
