Leading 1,000 European retailers and a new Elite named in new RetailX report

A new RetailX report names the Top1000 multichannel and ecommerce retailers serving Europe and the six Elite leaders that top the list.

Amazon, Boulanger, Decathlon, H&M, Fnac and Kiabi are this year’s Elite retailers in the RetailX Europe 1000 (RXEU Top1000) report, published in association with Tealium. H&M is the only retailer in this year’s Elite that was also listed last year, perhaps reflecting the changes that the report shows within European retailing over the last year.

The first RXEU Top1000 report builds and expands on research previously carried out for the InternetRetailing EU Top500 report. The shift to the RetailX brand reflects the growing importance of its research within the InternetRetailing stable, while the number of retailers listed in this report has now doubled to 1,000 in order to give a more complete picture of the continent’s ecommerce and multichannel leaders.

Ian Jindal, editor-in-chief of RetailX, says the expansion of the report has proved to be a timely one. “This report comes in a year of significant change for retailers across the continent,” he said. “Many more shoppers have bought more of their shopping online during each country’s Covid-19 lockdown, and the evidence suggests they will continue to do so in future. At the same time, retailers, manufacturers and wholesalers have moved quickly over the last few months to adopt or upgrade their digital approaches to selling.”

The report, he says, can be used to find out both which retailers have set the pace in Europe and what tools and strategies leading European retailers are using to sell online and across sales channels to the 32 markets of Europe – the EU and EEA countries, Switzerland and the UK.

RetailX researchers take a practical approach, assessing retailers not only by turnover and online reach but also through six Performance Dimensions: Strategy & Innovation, The Customer, Engagement, Merchandising, Mobile & Cross-channel and Operations & Logistics. The report’s findings are presented through quick-to-read graphics and case studies. It also sets the context against which these retailers are operating and explores some of the ways they have responded to ongoing challenges including, most prominently, the Covid-19 pandemic and the effect it has had on driving retail further online.
