Lidl Belgium has closed down its same-day grocery delivery service in Ghent.

The company shuttered the Simpl programme on 20 December, saying that it would now evaluate the programme.

The page has now been replaced with a questionnaire asking customers what they liked about the service and asking whether the use of bikes for deliveries was important. It is unclear if Simpl will be relaunched based on the feedback.

Simpl launched in October 2018 with free two-hour delivery for orders of over €25. Lidl partnered with bike delivery start-up Cargo Velo on the pilot. Six months after launch the service had delivered over 25,000 grocery orders, covering around 15,000km without CO2 emissions. In May 2019, Lidl expanded the product range and introduced a €3.99 delivery fee, before adding a click and collect option in October.

According to Lidl, the service was primarily used by young families with children, with Monday afternoons and evenings the most popular time slot for deliveries. A third of shopping bags contained fruit and vegetables while 28% contained refrigerated products and 12% meat, poultry and fish products.
