A week of late summer sunshine meant shoppers were not ready to buy online with John Lewis, new figures suggest.

The department store retailer said online sales grew by 12.7% in the week to September 20, while sales over the first eight weeks of the year, up to and including that week, grew at a more upbeat 22%.

John Lewis sales grew by 2% over the week, while in the year-so-far sales grew by 8.1%.

"With the recent warm weather and temperatures of up to 25 degrees celsius customers were not in the mood just yet for buying cold weather products and this was reflected across all assortments," said Barry Matheson, director, retail services at John Lewis.

The story was different at sister company Waitrose , where online sales grow by 20.5% during the week, taking year-so-far ecommerce sales to 16.5%. Total sales, excluding petrol, rose by 8.4%, while in the eight weeks to September 20 they rose by 6.4%.
