Carrefour targets office workers with lunchtime delivery service

French supermarket chain Carrefour has added both a new product segment and a new distribution channel after acquiring a start-up specialising in office lunchtime delivery.

Dejbox offers a range of prepared meals for business employees. Founded in 2015, the company now ships over 400,000 meals per month.

The company operates its delivery fleets in Lille, Lyon Paris, Bordeaux, Nantes and Grenoble.

Carrefour will be able to target the 10 million French workers who work in areas around cities that are not served well by restaurants or grocery outlets. Meanwhile, Dejbox will now be able to both expand its French operations and move to new international markets.

Amélie Oudéa-Castera, executive director customers, services and digital transformation at Carrefour, said: “This acquisition, which reflects Carrefour’s desire to become the leader in grocery ecommerce, is a strategic one.

“It will give us the opportunity to expand our customer base to include employees of medium-sized, small and micro businesses and also invest in the fast-growing food delivery segment with an offering rooted in quality and affordability.”

Dejbox co-founders Adrien Verhack and Vincent Dupied said: “We made the strategic decision to join with Carrefour because we firmly believe it’s the best possible partner for helping us achieve our ambitious growth plans for Dejbox and for offering as many people as possible an online, affordable, sustainable and tasty alternative to a sandwich or a home-cooked meal.”
