Top tips for merchandising in the Gen Z era

Life and the news cycle both slow down in the Summer, giving InternetRetailing readers the chance to catch up on some stories that may have slipped past during the year. This year we’re marking each of the six core summer holiday weeks by focusing on our core InternetRetailing themes and revisiting some of the ways that we’ve explored those themes in print.

 

We’re reviewing, reconsidering and refreshing some of the critical lessons, practical examples, and ideas that could work for others just as well as they already have for IRUK Top500 retailers.

 

This week we are focusing on Merchandising, and we’ll be turning our attention to Mobile & Crosschannel, Operations & Logistics and Strategy & Innovation over the coming weeks.

 

In today’s newsletter, we commence our merchandising journey with a look at some interesting data from KAM media about Generation Z. These guys are under 24s, but are increasingly becoming the demographic whose demands are going to shape the future or retail.

 

KAM’s research uncovers what they like – and don’t like – and offer a valuable insight into how to merchandise to this increasingly influential segment.

 

We also take a look at the role of social media influencers in merchandising – and find that a study by Bazaarvoice suggest that consumers are demanding more and more of social influencers. According to its study, nearly half of shoppers are finding it all a bit repetitive.

 

Meanwhile, Carrerfour Belgium is looking to use online to help sell more fresh produce with “all the advantages of the virtual, but without any of the disadvantages”.

 

We wrap up the news with the tie up of SnapChat and LiveRamp,which now offers stores the ability to track how their Snaps can lead to in-store sales – another vital part of the modern merchandising model.

 

Our trip to the archives also reveals four key ways that IRUK Top 500 retailers are tackling merchandisingin this increasingly social-media driven world.
