Tui Travel reports 40% of holidays sold online this winter

Four in 10 of Tui Travel‘s winter holidays were sold online in 2013/14, five percentage points more than at the same time last year.

Updating the market this week ahead of its closed period, the travel company, which trades in the UK through First Choice and Thomson shops and websites, said online was also contributing towards sales of summer 2014 holidays, with ecommerce bookings for the period up by 8%.

“Summer 2014 trading is in line with expectations,” said Peter Long, chief executive of TUI Travel, “with a strong online performance across mainstream, particularly in the UK and Germany (+22%).”

He added: “Our customers are increasingly seeing the benefits of our digital transformation strategy, which in turn is driving conversion improvements from our new web platforms.”

In all, 93% of winter holidays are already sold in the UK, and 97% of total mainstream holidays. The company said that demand for unique holidays was growing, so far accounting for 72% of summer 2014 holiday bookings.

The company said it expected to grow underlying operating profits by between 7% and 10% in the full year.

Meanwhile competitor Thomas Cook said winter trading had been satisfactory, with 93% of holidays already sold, and that 50% of summer 2014 holidays were already sold. It said winter UK bookings were 2% up on the same time last year, but that pricing was hit as more people bought shorter, one-week holidays.
