Supermarket Tesco has updated its iPhone app to allow Clubcard members to find out their current points balance from their smartphone, according to its technology guru Nick Lansley’s blog.

That means users can find out how many points they have whether they’re in the store or elsewhere on the move.

The app also allows users to calculate how many points they could collect in a year. By setting a series of sliders to the anticipated expenditure over a variety of Tesco services in a week, month or year, the app’s calculator will work out how many points a shopper would accumulate.

Our view: We’re interested to see how Tesco is leveraging its clubcard. This app clearly helps to motivate consumers by showing them how many points they could earn. Loyalty points seem to have become an increasingly important way of retaining and developing customer loyalty in troubled economic times when getting a good deal is more important than ever. From the retailer’s point of view, of course, they help gain that all-important single view of where the customer is spending.
