Aldi halts Deliveroo trial to focus on click and collect

Aldi has halted its Deliveroo trial after seeing consumers return to its stores following the easing of coronavirus restrictions and fears.
The two companies first partnered in May 2020 during the UK’s first national lockdown. By November 2020 the trial had extended to around 130 of Aldi’s 950 stores across the country.

However, Aldi now plans to focus on its own home shopping service instead. The company said it had decided to end the trial in favour of its click and collect service, which has been on offer in more than 200 Aldi stores nationwide since December 2020.

Deliveroo last week said that in H2 2021, on-demand grocery represented 8% of total GTV, up from 7% in H1 2021 and 6% in H2 2020. At the end of 2021, Deliveroo had over 11,000 grocery sites live globally, compared to over 10,000 at the end of Q3 2021.
