M&S is working with resale partner Reskinned to launch its first dedicated resale service for clothing, footwear and accessories on eBay. From today (26 August) M&S customers can trade-in and purchase pre-loved items on the official M&S x eBay store. 15% of M&S’ profits from the venture will go to Oxfam.

M&S is claims to be one of the most searched for brands on eBay, with such searches increasing by 525% in the last year alone.

The new partnership accepts rewearable items including footwear, handbags, belts, hats and scarves. These were previously excluded from M&S’ in-store clothes recycling scheme. The new one-stop shop will provide a place for customers to recycle and repurchase M&S items on eBay.

Sending items to Reskinned

To use the service customers will complete a short form on M&S.com or scan QR codes in M&S’ fashion, home and beauty stores. They will then send their pre-loved items to Reskinned, using a free local courier service.

For each return containing at least one M&S-labelled item, customers will receive a £5 discount off a spend of £35 or more on fashion, home, and beauty products at M&S.com. The discount is valid for four weeks from date of issue.

Items received that can be worn again will be professionally cleaned, repaired and listed by Reskinned on the M&S x eBay store. Those that can’t be resold will be responsibly repurposed or recycled.

Another life

The launch is the latest initiative under Another Life, which is how M&S activates its Plan A strategy in Fashion, Home & Beauty. Another Life brings together M&S’ approach to circularity into one place with a focus on the four R’s; Rewear, Repair, Recycle and Resale.

M&S, which was the first major UK retailer to launch a clothes recycling scheme in 2008, says that the new initiative completes the final R of that pledge – resale.

Monique Leewenburgh, director of sourcing and technology in fashion, home and beauty at M&S, said: “We are committed to supporting customers to do the right thing and playing our part in reducing textile waste. The dedicated resale platform not only offers more ways for customers to give items Another Life, but also an opportunity for customers to purchase items they might have missed from previous seasons, which are pre-loved.”

Kirsty Keoghan, senior director, Europe fashion at eBay, said: “For nearly three decades, eBay has partnered with fashion brands to help them sell seamlessly at every stage of the inventory lifecycle, while championing the principles of recommerce and the circular economy. Welcoming M&S to the eBay marketplace represents an exciting milestone in our mission to make circular fashion more accessible, appealing, and scalable.”
