DHL invests in expanding its UK network following Covid-19 ecommerce growth

DHL Parcel has invested more than £17.5m to increase its network capacity after a year in which it has dealt with 40% more parcels, reflecting the current fast growth in ecommerce.

The carrier is doubling its footprint and the number of parcels that it can process as it moves five sites in locations that are strategically important for it.

A new £7.5m, 85,000 sq ft facility recently opened in Eastleigh. It’s double the size of its previous parcel handling operation in Fareham, which are moving to the new site. It has also opened a new 79,000 sq ft facility in Sheffield that’s three times of the size of its existing sites in the area and will handle up to 20,000 parcels a day.

New facilities have also opened in Lincoln, Norwich and Perth, all fitted with the latest sorting equipment in order to improve operational efficiency.

Peter Fuller, chief executive of DHL Parcel UK, says: “The global pandemic has driven huge uplift in ecommerce and accelerated our network upgrade plans. The new infrastructure will improve our parcel handling capabilities enabling us to support our customers’ ongoing ecommerce growth.”
