First UK town centre robot deliveries now up and running

Robot deliveries are now available in the centre of a UK town for the first time. Residents and workers in the centre of Milton Keynes can now order food or drink to be delivered by robot. This, says provider Starship Technologies, marks the first time that robot delivery has been available in the centre, rather than the suburbs, of a UK town.

Starship’s robots have been making deliveries in some parts of Milton Keynes since April 2018 – but not until now in the centre of the town. Now smartphone users can order a delivery via the Starship deliveries app  from food and drink providers including Peels Juice Bar, Bandit Street Food and Maaya Indian.

Starships says the move will help relieve heavy traffic congestion in the centre of Milton Keynes.

Sam Crooks, mayor of Milton Keynes, said: ““The robots have become an iconic sight in the town and everyone’s excited at the prospect of them delivering in the town centre. For the 180,000 people who work in the centre of MK, this means that they can get their lunch delivered to them conveniently, saving them time during their working day.

“We’re living in an era where we are more conscious about the individual effect we’re having on the environment, and the centre of MK can get very congested. Hopefully this new service will ease congestion in the centre and make it that bit more environmentally-friendly, whilst giving workers the opportunity to experience robot delivery in a town on the front line of new technological advancements.”

Andrew Curtis of Starship Technologies, said: “We’ve seen huge surges in demand since we started operating in Milton Keynes two years ago. We’re excited that both residents and workers can now enjoy this low cost and convenient benefit in the centre of Milton Keynes, and we hope that it will make the town an even more attractive place to work in the future.”

Elsewhere in Milton Keynes, the Co-op has been using Starship’s robots for deliveries from its Monkston Park or Emerson’s Valley shops since 2018.
