DHL Express will be able to handle nearly 37,000 packages an hour through a new automated hub at Copenhagen Airport.
The shipping company has invested DKK 1 billion (€134 million) in the new 26 square km facility, located at the eastern freight area of the airport.
Set to open in 2023, the site will add 100 new jobs in the region and will use “state-of-the-art” automation, although the company did not give specific details.
The new site will mean that parcels sent to and from Denmark will no longer need to travel through DHL hubs in Germany or the UK, allowing them to reach destinations more directly.
John Pearson, global CEO of DHL Express, said: “We want to grow through quality. Therefore, we are investing significantly into the expansion of our infrastructure to increase efficiencies and to improve delivery capabilities. Our international hubs are the backbone of our global network which connects businesses from all industries and private customers alike, and enables them to benefit from the ongoing e-commerce growth.”
Atli Einarsson, MD of DHL Express in Denmark, said the hub would help support “enormous growth” in cross-border online trade, citing manufacturing companies within fashion as one of the primary areas.
He added that the upgrade would make the site one of the company’s most modern worldwide.
“This demonstrates the importance of our country’s future role in the network.”
Last year saw DHL expand its air fleet to over 260 planes.
