DPD has completed a new parcel sorting centre in Germany which it believes will add 200,000 parcels to its daily capacity.
The courier has invested more than €50 million in the new facility in Hamm, North Rhine-Westphalia, which has taken one and a half years to complete.
Set to open on 7 September, the warehouse comprises 17,300 square metres on a 122,000 square metre site, initially fulfilling around 80,000 parcels per day with 350 workers. This will later rise to 800 workers and 200,000 parcels.
The high performance sorting installation from BUDDE Fördertechnik will initially be able to sort 17500 parcels per hour, rising to 30,000.
The centre will replace the existing site in Unna-Königsborn, which DPD said was not providing sufficient capacity in light of the company’s growth.
It is designed to be energy-efficient, making use of LEDs and conservation systems for heating.
