Editorial: Weathering the storm


As we most of us have just endured a traditional bank holiday weekend over Easter (ie wet, wet, wet) it’s a reminder of how much of an influence that the weather can have on retail – both on buying patterns and on delivery.
The latest figures from the IMRG MetaPack UK Delivery Index showed that on-time delivery in February was at 88%, down from January, as the snow took its tool. It also showed the biggest percentage of customers choosing next day for the month of February in six years – putting even more pressure on retailers’ delivery infrastructures which naturally struggled to cope with the weather.

Latest analysis from Frost & Sullivan meanwhile shows that global logistics spending its set to top $10.6 trillion in 2020, with last mile accounting for around two-fifths of that cost.

A new announcement from DHL this week has seen the company further expand its global presence with the launch of a new global fulfilment platform as well as the launch of several new fulfilment centres, with more yet planned. The company wants to tap into the opportunities of the global ecommerce boom.

Also with expansion on its mind is FedEx which has purchased UK delivery business P2P and will operate it as a subsidiary of its FedEx Cross Border business.

And finally back home is the news of a relaxation of driver licensing for alternatively fuelled vans, which has been welcomed by the FTA .
